Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
At Hextable Primary school, we aim to foster a love and appreciation for other languages and cultures by regularly exposing our pupils to a modern foreign language in more depth. We hope that this will equip them with the tools they need to be life-long language learners and global citizens.
Aims of the National Curriculum and our MFL programme of study
The National Curriculum for MFL aims to ensure that all pupils:
• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Intent
At Hextable Primary School, our vision is that during KS2 our children will develop their language learning skills and knowledge of modern foreign languages to be able to communicate effectively and become all-round global citizens in a rapidly changing world. Learning a modern foreign language prepares our children for a life in modern Britain, in which work and activities increasingly involve using languages other than English.
We want our children to develop an awareness of cultural differences and a tolerance of diversity within society, as well as being open-minded, curious and adventurous in all aspects of their language learning. Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving an insight into their own culture and those of others.
At Hextable Primary School our KS2 children are taught French. The learning of French provides a valuable educational, social, and cultural experience for all pupils. Pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for further study and future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between French and English. Learning French further provides a medium for cross-curricular links and the reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.
